April 2018
Your monthly source of European youth related information.

We would like to hear from you!

The European Commission has commissioned a survey to review the outreach of EU networks such as Eurodesk. The aim is to produce a report based on data collection through users' surveys, since the perception and opinion of European citizens on the visibility, accessibility and functioning of European Union outreach networks is extremely important for a complete and comprehensive assessment.

The report will identify the potential areas of cooperation and possible synergies that could arise between the networks and will present recommendations for strengthening their collective communication and outreach impact. The survey is completely anonymous and it requires only 15 minutes to complete. It's available in English, Danish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Romanian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish

Eurodesk Competence Framework

Eurodesk has recently adopted a “Competence Framework of Eurodesk Mobility Advisors” that provides a common framework about the key competences involved in the ‘core business’ of Eurodesk – that is, providing information about mobility opportunities to young people all over Europe.

The Competence Framework aims at supporting the Eurodesk training and development plan and the comprehensive quality of the network. Furthermore it aims at giving greater visibility and recognition to the work of Eurodesk youth information workers. The Competence Framework is flexible enough to be used in diverse national Eurodesk realities.

Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange

On 15th March, the European Commission launched the Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange, a project to promote intercultural dialogue and improve the skills of at least 25,000 young people through digital learning tools over the next two years. Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange will connect young people, youth workers, students and academics from European countries and the Southern neighbourhood of the EU through different activities such as moderated discussions, transnational project groups, open online courses and advocacy training. The online version of Erasmus+ has already raised interest among universities and youth organisations since it complements the traditional physical mobility programme and could be extended to other regions of the world in the next years.

EU's long term budget: Parliament sets out its priorities

On 14th March MEPs adopted Parliament’s official negotiating position for the EU’s next long-term budget starting in 2021. MEPs adopted a report calling for the Erasmus+ budget to be at least tripled in the next MFF in order to reach many more young people, youth organisations and secondary school pupils and apprentices across Europe. The Parliament also stressed the importance to take measures in order to enable people coming from a disadvantaged socio-economic background and people with disabilities to participate in the programme. MEPs also called on the European Commission to follow up on the ‘18th Birthday Interrail Pass for Europe’ project, stressing that the initiative would become a key component in increasing European consciousness and identity.

Tackling disinformation online: Expert Group advocates for more transparency among online platforms

On 12th March, in a report handed over to Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel, the High-Level Expert Group on Fake News and Online Disinformation suggested a definition of the phenomenon and made a series of recommendations. The report defines disinformation as false, inaccurate, or misleading information designed, presented and promoted for profit or to intentionally cause public harm. The group recommends to promote media literacy to counter disinformation; develop tools for empowering users and journalists to tackle disinformation; safeguard the diversity and sustainability of the European news media; and continue research on the impact of disinformation in Europe. It also advocates for a Code of Principles that online platforms and social networks should commit to.
